What’s the benefit of Morning Prayer?

What we do in the morning tends to have a big impact on our outlook and mood throughout the rest of the day. Starting our mornings with prayer reinforces our mind, body, and spirit with a sense of calmness, gratitude, and joy to help us maintain a positive perspective through our daily tasks. It is common to get distracted, frustrated, or in a rush, especially in the morning, but praying to God and giving thanks soon after waking, gives us peace to better approach each day. It is much easier to enjoy our life when we begin each day praising the grace and gifts from God!

A Morning Prayer by Lysa Terkeurst

A Morning Prayer by Lysa Terkeurst

Lord, may nothing separate me from You today. Teach me how to choose only Your way today so each step will lead me closer to You. Help me walk by the Word and not my feelings.

Help me to keep my heart pure and undivided. Protect me from my own careless thoughts, words, and actions. And keep me from being distracted by MY wants, MY desires, MY thoughts on how things should be.

Help me to embrace what comes my way as an opportunity . . . rather than a personal inconvenience.

And finally, help me to rest in the truth of Psalm 86:13, “Great is your love toward me.” (NIV 1984)

You already see the ways I will fall short and mess up. But right now, I consciously tuck Your whisper of absolute love for me into the deepest part of my heart. I recognize Your love for me is not based on my performance. You love me warts and all. That’s amazing.

But what’s most amazing is that the Savior of the world would desire a few minutes with me this morning. Lord, help me to forever remember what a gift it is to sit with You like this. Amen.

For Light to Follow You: Morning Prayer from 440 AD

O Lord,
direct our steps this day into the way of peace,
and strengthen our hearts
to obey your commandments.
May the Dayspring visit us from on high,
and give light
to those who sit in darkness
and the shadow of death,
that they may adore you for your mercy,
follow you for your truth,
desire you for your sweetness,
for you are the blessed Lord God of Earth,
now and forever. Amen.

Morning Prayer of Daylight Strength

Morning Prayer of Daylight Strength

Dear Lord,

This daylight, upon waking and getting ready for my day, I pray that you give me strength today, to be strong for You in this world full of temptations.

Lord, You know that there are struggles I will go through today. I pray that you be with me as I go through them. Carry me when I am too weak. If I stumble into temptation, forgive me Father. Lead me away from them, Father. I need Your strength to overcome these evils.

When I triumph against them, I praise you, Father. For without You, I will not be where I am and I will not have the strength I have. Bless my loved ones with the strength You have given me, Lord. You are worthy of all praises and the entire honor in the world. You are my strength and my protection.

Keep me and my family safe at all times, Lord, especially those who are in transit during this morning.

In Your Son Jesus’ name, I pray, Amen.

Sunshine Prayer for the Ones Who Hold My Heart

Dear Lord,

I saw the sun shining so brightly this morning. It made me remember of my family and how blessed I am that you have given them to me.

Thank you for my father, for enduring every hard day to be able to provide for us and never complains. Even on his weak days, he remains strong and hard working. Today he went to work early this morning to provide us with a good life here on earth.

Thank you for my mother who loves us unconditionally just like Mary loved Jesus. She provided us with breakfast food on the table which were very delicious.

Thank you for the gift of siblings, Lord. Life would be so dull without them. They are my first best friends and my first companions during breakfast talks.

You have truly great plans for everyone and that includes having the best siblings in the world. I may not say it as often, but I love them dearly. Bless our family today as we go our separate ways. Keep them safe from harm and lead us not into temptation. There is nothing more that I shall want but their happiness. Brings us all back home safely to each other, In Jesus’ name I pray. Amen.

Prayer For Spiritual Light

Almighty God,
in you there is no darkness at all.
Give us your eternal light.
When we cannot see the way before us,
may we continue to put our trust in you,
that under your guidance and protection
we may be kept from falling this day,
and finally, by your mercy,
enter into our rest;
through Jesus Christ our Lord.

A Morning Prayer

Almighty God,
you fill all things with your presence.
In your great love,
keep us near you this day.
Grant that in all our ways and doings
we may remember that you see us,
and may always have grace to know and perceive
what things you would have us do,
and give us strength to do the same;
through Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen.

Prayer for First Thing in the Morning

Prayer for First Thing in the Morning

Good morning, Lord!

Thank You for a new day. Thank You that Your compassion is renewed every morning. Great is Your faithfulness and Your steadfast love, O Lord!

I don’t know what all is going to happen today, and how much I’ll get done, but You do. So I give this day to You.

Fill me with Your Holy Spirit, Father. Energize me for Your work, because You know how tired these bones are. Awaken me to the wonder of Your salvation, and quicken my spirit to the reality of Your work in my life.

Lord, my mind is filled with creative ideas, but they’re all jumbled. Holy Spirit, come and hover over my mind like You hovered over the waters at creation and speak order out of the chaos! Help me to cease striving and to trust that You will give me all I need today to do the work You’ve given me to do.

You will be faithful to complete the good work You’ve started, and as I step out into my day, I declare Your sovereignty over every area of my life. I entrust myself to You and ask that You use me however You see fit.

This day is Yours. My body is Yours. My mind is Yours. Everything I am is Yours. May You be pleased with me today. Amen.

Daily Prayer of Thanksgiving

Dear God,

Thank you for your amazing power and work in our lives, thank you for your goodness and for your blessings over us.

Thank you for your great love and care. Thank you for your sacrifice so that we might have freedom and life.

Forgive us for when we don’t thank you enough, for who you are, for all that you do, for all that you’ve given.

Help us to set our eyes and our hearts on you afresh. Renew our spirits, fill us with your peace and joy.

We love you and we need you, this day and every day. We give you praise and thanks, for You alone are worthy!

In Jesus’ Name, Amen. – Debbie McDaniel

Arise and Shine in My Heart

O Lord Jesus,
Creator of all things,
light of the glory
of the Father in heaven.
I thank you for letting me see
the light of a new day!
Bright Sun of Righteousness,
arise and shine in my heart,
so that I may walk as a child of light as in the day,
and finally see you
in the eternal light of joy everlasting.

Morning Prayer for Strength

Lord, I am weary and don’t know when this “race” will end in my life. I feel like I’ve been running forever, trying to outrun this trial. Help me to stop trying to outrun my pain but rather run with endurance the race you have set before me.

I know that because of you I am ultimately a victor over the trials in my life. I know that nothing in this world can separate me from your steadfast love. Please give me a measure of your love today; give me the strength to endure this trial.

Thank you for your love for me that never ends! And thank you for the crown of joy that awaits me forever in your Kingdom! – Adrian Rogers

Morning Prayer for Courage

Lord, grant me tenacious winsome courage as I go through this day. When I am tempted to give up, help me to keep going. Grant me a cheerful spirit when things don’t go my way. And give me the courage to do whatever needs to be done. In Jesus’ name, Amen.

Morning Prayer for Hope Today

Lord, help me to hear you saying, “I am your hope” over all the other voices. Lord, your word says, you are the hope for hopeless so I’m running to you with both hands stretched out and grabbing on to you.

Fill me up with hope and give me a tangible reminder today that hope is an unbreakable spiritual lifeline (Hebrews 6:19-20). God, you know those things in my heart that I barely dare to hope for, today I give them to you, I trust them to you, and ask that you because I know that you can do more than I could ever guess, imagine or request in wildest dreams (Eph 3:20).

God, you are my hope and I trust you. Amen. – Wendy can Eyck

Morning Prayer for God’s Grace Daily

Lord, thank you for your abundant, abounding grace. Thank you that we don’t have to earn a drop of the mighty river of grace that flows freely for us today. Thank you for the unexpected, unmerited favor you’ve showered on my life. Help me put myself in the path of your love and grace. Help me not neglect the disciplines I need to meet with you regularly and to drink from the water of life. Thank you for your rich love. Amen. – David Mathis

Do you know why God loves you?

I was sitting on the couch early one morning last week when my four year old son came and sat down by me. He’s my wild one, the child who doesn’t stop, so having him sit quietly next to me is a rare occurrence. I gently put my arm around him and pulled him close, as I said “Son, do you know why I love you?” He looked at me with a puzzled look on his face.

“Is it because I am nice?” “No sir,” I said with a smile.

“Because I put my shoes away?” I shook my head no.

“Because I eat all my dinner” “No, son.”

I laughed and said, “That’s great and all, but that’s not why I love you.”

He just stared at me with a big smile on his face. Then I locked eyes with him and said, “I love you because you are my child. I love you because you are mine.”

To be loved unconditionally, with no strings attached, is a difficult love to process. It is a challenge because such love is counter to the love we find here in this world. To find love in this world, you just have to find a way to produce what the world desires. And the world wants you to perform actions that will bring it value. Work hard at your job, and you’ll receive love from your boss. Make your family’s favorite dessert, and you’ll be the most popular one in the house, at least for half an hour. Look good while having a ton of money, and society will be your best friend. But the love the world gives us isn’t pure. It’s conditional. Works-based. You have to do something to earn it. And most of all, it doesn’t satisfy. It may for a moment, but that moment won’t last.

The love of God the Father is so radically different than the love this world provides. It doesn’t make logical sense. In fact, it is so simple, it’s complicated. God loves you just as you are, not as you should be. He loves you for you, not for what you do. When he sees you, he smiles because you are his most prized possession. And you do absolutely nothing to earn or deserve such love.

This concept is difficult for me because of a number of things. First off, receiving such perfect love from a perfect Father is hard. I am so used to earning love through performance that unconditional love feels foreign at best, and cheap at worst. I’m much better at doing things for God than I am at receiving from God. Next, the concept of being loved by a good Father is hard for me to navigate due to my experiences with my earthly father. But, even for the best of fathers, the fatherly love God provides is different in all the best ways. Lastly, often times the lies I believe and my past sins make me feel like I am unworthy of such love. The question, “Why would he love someone like me?,” pops up, keeping me from experiencing the perfect love the Lord has for me.

But if God really is who he says he is, perfect and loving regardless of my actions, and if I am really who he says I am, his child worthy of being a part of his family, then I want to experience all that my perfect father has for me.

Here are four ways that I try to experience the perfect love of God the Father on a consistent basis:

  1. Down with performance-based love!:

What is the “why” behind the things that you do? Which activities are you doing because of obligation to make God or man happy? Do you really believe God loves you just as you are, regardless of performance? I have found fear to be the main driver of most of my actions, but when I know that “perfect love casts out fear” it helps me change the motives of my actions. (1 John 4:18)
  1. Deal with my past:

Is there anything hiding in the darkness that you need to bring out into the light? Dealing with issues such as unforgiveness, childhood disappointments, or unprocessed hurts through trusted friends or professional counseling has brought freedom in my life.
  1. Speak the truth:

The devil is the king of lies, and he’ll speak those lies to you to keep you from experiencing the love of God the Father. Whenever I hear a lie, such as, “What will people think?”, or “You’re not _____ enough to do that,” I speak truth over myself, for example, “I am a child of God,” or “That doesn’t sound like something a perfect Father would say to his child.” Remember, God only speaks words that uplift and encourage; the enemy is the one who condemns, judges, and brings you down. Replacing the lies I believe with Scripture helps me remember who I am and who God says I am.
  1. Being over doing:

Spending quality time just being with God the Father helps me develop intimacy with him and receive his love from his Holy Spirit. Praying, reading the Bible, and listening to worship music fixes my eyes on Him instead of on the things of this world. Quality time with someone is a must in any healthy relationship, and that is true with the Lord as well.

As you go through today, I want you to ponder one question: Do you know why God the Father loves you? It’s not because you’re nice, or because you put your shoes away, or because you finished all your dinner. It’s not because of how much money you have, your daily accomplishments, or how many times you go to Church small group. Those are all great, but that’s not why he loves you. He loves you because you are his child. Because you are his. You are his most prized possession. May we all walk more in that truth today.
